Economy

On Thursday, the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England faced two fresh challenges as they discussed another interest rate increase.

The welcome news of a dramatic decline in wholesale energy costs had to be taken into account by the nine MPC members, including BoE governor Andrew Bailey, and then incorporated into the committee's freshly negative assessment of the UK economy's potential to grow without producing inflation.

The end effect was chaotic. Although the BoE's updated projections suggested that inflation would fall considerably below the central bank's target of 2% by the following year, MPC members decided to raise interest rates from 3.5 to 4 per cent by a majority of seven to two.

Senior BoE officials defended the action at a news conference by comparing it to purchasing insurance against future price increases, just in case the inflation predictions were inaccurate. After reaching a peak of 11.1 per cent in October, consumer price inflation decreased to 10.5% in December.

FMCG

Reliance Consumer Products (RCPL), the FMCG division and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Retail Ventures (RRVL), has formed a strategic alliance with Maliban Biscuit Manufactories, which is headquartered in Sri Lanka (Maliban). Reliance will provide Indian consumers with a variety of biscuits thanks to this agreement. Reliance is now a player in the biscuit market, where it will face off against Parle Products and Britannia Industries. For the past 70 years, Maliban has been a household name in Sri Lanka thanks to its assortment of biscuits, crackers, cookies, and wafers. According to a release from RRVL, the company has increased the global markets for its products and now sells to over 35 nations on five continents.

According to Isha Ambani, executive director of RRVL, "Maliban has a rich history and reputation and holds a leading market position. With the help of this strategic alliance between RCPL and Maliban, we will be able to give our Indian customers a fantastic value proposition through high-quality products while also expanding our FMCG range with a strong brand. Reliance is in a great position to further increase the tremendous consumer equity and reach that Maliban has developed over the course of 70 years because it is the custodian of several well-known international brands in India, she continued.

The Story :

France's Renault (RENA.PA) and its Japanese partner Nissan (7201.T) will formally unveil the agreement to reshape their alliance on Feb. 6 in London, the two car makers said in a joint statement on Thursday.

The announcement, with junior alliance partner Mitsubishi Motors, confirmed a Jan. 26 Reuters exclusive about the deal, which will retool the two-decade-old alliance to put the two car makers on an equal footing and which will see Nissan invest in Renault's new electric vehicle business.

"At this conference, the members of the alliance will present the agreements that will define the new bases for their partnership - presuming prior approval of their respective boards," the three companies said.

The conference, which will be broadcast live, will start at 0830 GMT.

TECH

Twitter will no longer provide free access to the Twitter API from February 9th. As announced by the official Twitter Developer account late Wednesday night, Elon Musk’s social media hobby will stop supporting free access to the Twitter API. It will instead provide a “paid basic tier.” Twitter hasn’t provided any pricing information but said it will provide “more details on what you can expect next week.”

Twitter’s API — abbreviated from Application Programming Interface — allows third parties to retrieve and analyze public Twitter data, which can then be used to create programmable bots and separate applications that connect to the platform, such as Pikaso, Thread Reader, and RemindMe_OfThis. Twitter currently provides limited free access to its API alongside premium, scalable tiers for developers that need to lift restrictions on accessing endpoints and unlock additional enterprise features. Twitter does not publicly disclose the price of its premium API tiers, though it was reported in February last year that fees start from $99 a month and increase depending on the level of access required..
